Spacestor Expands Global Presence with NY Flagship Designed by Gensler
Workspace Disruptor Opens Experiential Design Centre for Architects, Designers, and Workplace Strategists

(March 1, 2020 – New York, NY) Spacestor – a manufacturer of uniquely cool and customizable workplace furniture - is excited to announce the opening of its New York flagship. Having served some of the world’s top tech companies from its Los Angeles location, the company tapped Gensler to design a warm, inviting, and versatile space for the brand and its clients in Manhattan’s Midtown South neighborhood. With an interior primarily built using Spacestor products and a media lab where designers can test ideas and create customizable 3D models, it serves as an inspiring destination for design professionals to learn about the latest workplace trends and discover how Spacestor products fit these emerging needs.

After spotting a major shift in workplace culture - a trend popularized by many of Silicon Valley’s biggest tech companies - Spacestor opened its first U.S. location in Los Angeles in 2012 and began serving clients like Google, Amazon, LinkedIn, and Salesforce. The decision to open a New York flagship comes at a time when companies from other sectors, such as legal, financial and banking firms, are increasingly seeking mood-based design and flexible workplace solutions that echo the design and mentality of “tech company culture.”

“We see a huge opportunity for growth in the New York market,” says Nic Baxter, Managing Director at Spacestor. “Our experience working with some of the world’s largest businesses has shown us that multi-functional, hospitable spaces that offer a variety of workspace solutions and environments - whether for privacy, collaboration, relaxing or scrum work - are now the norm. More companies are seeing the value of investing in their workspace and their people, because they understand the positive, long-term impact it will have on attracting and retaining top talent.”

Gensler’s design for the space, nestled on the second floor of 460 Park Ave. South, is a direct response to what Spacestor calls a “workplace revolution.” The floor plan includes a range of options for different working styles, from open, free address workspaces that foster collaboration to more private accommodations for focused, independent work. It also incorporates several of today’s leading workplace trends, like multimodal spaces, mood-based design, invisible tech, and regenerative design.

“As a flagship destination that embodies the design principles of being global and local, heuristic and cool, it uses the products in inventive ways to convey how Spacestor is reimagining workplace design and fostering innovation,” states Mark Brungo, Principal and Project Director at Gensler. “This versatile space will promote collaboration, experimentation, and activations to build lasting relationships with designers, architects, and the local design community.”

With biophilic design elements such as climbing green plants, natural wood finishes, and an atrium “skylight” that mimics natural daylight, visitors are transported into a California-inspired oasis that reflects Spacestor’s “California Cool, London Design” aesthetic. Spacestor products - such as Residence Meet, Railway Carriage, and Bleachers - are placed intentionally around the perimeter of a central atrium, enabling visitors to discover new ways of using the products, while angled walls help guide visitors throughout the space to learn about different ways of working. Suspended above is a custom ceiling structure made from the company’s Palisades Grid modular shelving system, which also sections off the atrium from the rest of the space. In the back of the showroom, a media lab is equipped with a materials library and Customizer screen, which allows clients to work alongside Spacestor designers to create their own custom furniture solutions based on their projects’ needs.
