Spacestor Publishes Science-Based Commitment to Net Zero by 2040
In an industry first, Spacestor commit to a timeline of goals which will see them reach Net Zero by 2040.
LONDON, UK – October 5th, 2022 – Spacestor, creators of architectural, space-defining furniture are excited to announce a timeline of science-based targets, mapping their journey to Net Zero by 2040:
2030 – reduce Spacestor’s carbon intensity from across their operations (Scope 1, 2 and 3) by 15%. Transition to 100% renewable energy.
2035 – reduce absolute emissions from Spacestor’s operations (Scope 1 and 2) by 50%. Transition to zero carbon supply and distribution.
2040 – Spacestor achieve Net Zero emissions.
From long-term engagements with clients like Google, JP Morgan, and Pfizer, Spacestor know how sustainable workspace practices drive organizational goals, and as part of the Science Based Targets Initiative (STBI), the timeline will see them reach Net Zero 10 years ahead of the goal committed to in the Paris Agreement.
“The impact that the built environment has, is something that has become a real focus with many of Spacestor’s clients and many organisations globally” observes Alex Harvey, VP Sales, Spacestor. “We heard from one of our key clients recently, that two of the biggest areas identified in their organisational carbon footprint was the embodied carbon involved in workplace design and IT equipment.”
As societies around the world become more aware of their effect on the environment, many companies have become increasingly criticized for greenwashing in order to attract clients and talent. Although the term does not define every organisation’s attitude to the planet, it is becoming more and more urgent that genuinely concerned companies come on board and state where they stand in relation to carbon goals and sustainability.
As Consulting & Real Estate Services Leader for Gensler, Jacob Simons, observes – ‘Disingenuous CSR goals are the best way to stand out for the wrong reasons.’ It is true, and this also: that many smaller companies in the manufacturing industry shy away from publishing their environmental goals, in the risk that they will receive backlash for ‘greenwashing’. In a directed effort against this concept, Spacestor are publishing their commitment to Net Zero.
Alex continues, stating, “It is fair to say that the furniture industry has not been the quickest to respond in definite action to the large picture goals set by governments and large global companies. Whilst many furniture companies will claim to have an environmental and sustainable focus, this is not born out in real company-wide targets.” Adding that, “what Spacestor is doing today, is launching a new framework of goals which will change that and ensure we can support our clients in reaching their goals, because a concrete commitment makes a real difference to them and the journey that they are on.”
So, is the latest move by Spacestor, a global-reaching, but relatively small furniture manufacturer, a call to action? Is it a rallying cry? Following this ambitious commitment, the future holds many changes for Spacestor and the industry. Developments in technological infrastructure, switches to greener electric sources, innovations to effect change company-wide and beyond. The future will be challenging, but also uniquely rewarding to know that the actions made now, are contributing to a larger aim – to prevent the transition of the climate crisis into the climate catastrophe.
“Spacestor are confident that our goals will make a big difference to the industry, as other organisations act on the lead that Spacestor is taking’ he concludes, because combatting global warming and reducing greenhouse gases can only be done by working together, as an industry and as a community, energetically driving a reduction in emissions and the recovery of this planet.
