Synopsys Porto
Synopsys transformed its Porto office into a future-ready, intuitive workspace, where timeless design, sustainability, and employee wellbeing come together in perfect harmony.
Synopsys, a global leader in silicon design and verification, continues to expand its European footprint with the refurbishment of its Porto office. The project was a prime opportunity to increase space for a growing workforce, alongside renovating existing facilities.
As one of the Synopsys growth hubs in Europe, this location is used by 500 colleagues from one core team, so it has a different flavour compared to the recent Synopsys Munich project, which has representation from many more teams – in Olly Dickinson’s words ‘this is very much a focal point as opposed to a melting pot.’
The Porto office refurbishment aimed not only to accommodate an increasing headcount but also to introduce a new way of working, with more agility and a collaborative, user-focused layout. This project was Synopsys’ first major workplace project in the region undertaken with design firm Tétris. The project also introduced Haworth as the furniture partner.
Spacestor was pleased to work with Haworth, to provide cornerstone elements of the furniture landscape, with our Railway Carriage and Palisades products. These play an important role in Synopsys offices, now recognized by employees as signature elements across newer workspaces, these products have become iconic and a signature within their workplace design language.
The Railway Carriage provides a versatile and module space for focused work or informal meetings. It also acts as a visual anchor, offering a semi-enclosed space without disrupting the open-plan layout, and its intuitive use supports the free-flowing and relaxed feel of the space.
Palisades II have been used to create refined divisions within the open-plan space, offering both physical zoning and aesthetic refinement. These elements helped define different work zones without sacrificing openness, supporting fluid transitions between tasks and promoting a sense of autonomy and movement throughout the day.
The Spacestor products bring elements that have longevity and therefore provide future-proofing, in their modularity and simple, elegant lines. These cornerstone products, carefully selected for their flexibility and longevity, are part of Synopsys’ drive to create timeless spaces that don’t require frequent replacement, which contribute to both cost-effectiveness and environmental responsibility.
Sustainability was embedded throughout the project, both in mindset and material. The design incorporated carbon-negative flooring with plant-based tile backings, and standout elements such as wool-fleece and bio-resin molded chairs offers not only visual interest, but also a powerful statement on eco-conscious design.
Voluntary and spontaneous feedback of colleagues has highlighted how this space has a calm, welcoming feel, which is enhanced by the design and colour palette used throughout the office environment.
Located on the northern edge of a designated national park, this site offers a unique connection to nature, setting the tone for a space in its serenity and aesthetic. Drawing inspiration from this, the space features a calm, muted palette of soft blues and greens, with the softer and more natural colours being used over the logo and brand colour. These natural, grounded tones have a timeless quality and were selected for this and the benefits they offer in enhancing focus and creating a sense of calm.
The result is a sophisticated, elegant workspace that feels connected to its environment, avoids fleeting trends, and supports a variety of working styles—from quiet solo tasks to collaborative group work.
The Synopsys Porto refurbishment stands as a thoughtful blend of function, sustainability, and design, tailored to support both the company’s growth and evolving ways of working. By prioritizing intuitive spaces, enduring furniture solutions, and a calming natural aesthetic, the project has created a workplace that not only meets current needs but is built to adapt for the future. It reflects Synopsys’ commitment to employee wellbeing and environmental responsibility, and highlights their creation, once again, of a space that inspires connection, focus, and productivity.
